Some clear patches for the Venus Transit? - 8:27 6/6/2012
I thought I was going to get some good clear patches for a while for Venus transit 2012 - 8:27 6/6/2012 Alas, it was short lived and the clouds closed in before 9:00AM :(
Partial Solar Eclipse from Broadbeach Queensland - 14/11/2012 (Still time-lapse sequence)
Sequence of still images between 5:45 - 08:00 at 2 minute intervals, however with a few anomalies due to altazimuth camera mount and inattention by me alllowing the sun to drift out of frame a few times (mainly caused by talking to interested bystanders). Post processed with Adobe Photoshop CS5 to crop and align images and Windows Movie Maker to time-lapse sequence Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Solarfilm filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient temperature not captured. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided
I just put this in because I liked the cloud fringe and the peaking Sun, and it allowed me to use a Pink Floyd reference. :) Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Baaders Solarfilm filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient ~13C. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
My first attempt at Solar photography using a borrowed solar filter for the front of my 80mm APO refractor. Image is ISO-200 at 1/125sec and f6.0. Post processed by Adobe Photoshop CS5 to adjust colour and brightness. I immediately discovered that focus needs to be extremely accurate to see detail in the penumbra of sunspots and that through a DSLR with 2.5x right angle finder magnification this was difficult to achieve. Colour balance has probably been pushed a little too yellow and the red perimeter needs further processing attention. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Thousand Oaks Type 2+ ZSolar filter (borrowed from Stephen Boyd), Canon 400D DSLR, Ambient 30C. Mount - Skywatcher NEQ6 Pro. No guidescope.
Sun with sunspots - 19/5/2012 (Processed single image)
1/500 ISO 100 f/6.0 Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Thousand Oaks Type 2+ Solar filter (Jean-Marie Locci's), Canon 400D DSLR, Ambient 22C. Mount - Skywatcher NEQ6 Pro. No guidescope.
Venus Transit 2012 - a shot with less clouds and quite an array of sunspots - 8:20 6/6/2012
Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Homemade Baader AstroSolar Photo Film Solar filter, Canon 400D DSLR, Ambient 13C. Mount - Skywatcher NEQ6 Pro. Guidescope not used.
Solar Eclipse May 2013 - Obscured by Clouds - 10/05/2013 7:23AM I just put this in because I liked the cloud contrast, and it allowed me to use a Pink Floyd reference. :) Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Baaders Solarfilm filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient ~13C. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
My second attempt at Solar photography but the first using a homemade solarfilm solar filter for the front of my 80mm APO refractor. Image is ISO-100 at 1/250sec and f/6.0. Post processed by Adobe Photoshop CS5 to adjust colour and brightness. I iimproved my penumbral focus compared to my first attempt 4 days earlier, mainly through focus bracketing through the DSLR with 2.5x right angle finder. Colour balance probably still a little to orange and could be pushed toward yellow and the red perimeter needs further processing attention. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Teleview 2" 2X Powermate, Home made Solarfilm filter (Stephen Boyd's spares), Canon 400D DSLR, Ambient 35C. Mount - Skywatcher NEQ6 Pro. Orion ShortTube 80 - Not guideing.
Sun - 11/11/2012 (Processed image)
Taken as test of of gear that I was going to take with me for the eclipse three days later, including a hastily purchased lightweight ball-head camera tripod. It's always cool to get few sunspots. Post processed with Adobe Photoshop CS5 to crop, colour and contrast adjust. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Solarfilm filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient temperature not captured. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
Sun mid-partial solar eclipse - 14/11/2012 (Processed image)
Post processed with Adobe Photoshop CS5 to crop, colour and contrast adjust. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Baader AstroSolar Photo Film Solar filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient ??C. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
Solar Eclipse May 2013 - 10/05/2013 7:09AM After sorting out focus after emerging from the cloud this was my first decent shot. The solar filter and low altitude of the sun make this quite red. Sunspot visible in the centre top of the sun's disk. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Baaders Solarfilm filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient ~13C. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
Binoculars setup for projection of the Australia Day 2009 Partial Solar Eclipse (26th January).

Venus pops out from behind the clouds - 7:39 6/6/2012
Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Homemade Solarfilm filter, Canon 400D DSLR, Ambient 13C. Mount - Skywatcher NEQ6 Pro. Guidescope not used.
This was a total eclipse event further north in Cairns, Australia. However, being at a conference (Gartner ITxpo 2012) on the Queensland Gold Coast was far better than being at home in Perth (two hours further West over the horizon), so I was quite pleased to have the opportunity to capture an ~83% eclipse, conveniently timed 06:00-08:00 local time, allowing me to get to the first conference session at 8:30! Manual visual focusing - not perfectly focused. Post processed by Adobe Photoshop CS5 to crop, colour and contrast adjust. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, no filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient temperature not captured. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
Solar Eclipse May 2013 - 10/05/2013 7:18AM AWST
Clear of the dawn clouds now and the Moon's silhouette progresses to diminish. Telescope - Apogee OrthoStar LOMO 80/480 with Hotech SCA Field Flattener, Home made Baaders Solarfilm filter, Canon 40D DSLR field 106' x 159' , Ambient ~13C. Mount - Inca camera tripod unguided.
