Waxing Gibbous Moon (Craters and Mare) - 15/10/2013 (Processed stack)
The surface of The Moon contains smooth dark areas named 'Mare', Latin for Seas. They are not water filled but instead lava infill regions after very large impacts in the first billion years of the Moon's existence. The far side of The Moon has far fewer such areas as it received a much higher bombardment than the side that faces the Earth.
